Your experience is electronics will be very useful.
The best way to learn is to read, read and read and ask if you don't understand.
If you are curious you can improve your knowledge very fastly,it depends on you.
But don't hesitate to ask help from other and welcome in TE!

I think this forum is one of the best ways to acquire and exchange knowledge in car electronics.

Second hand Engine control units can't be used for replace defect control units. It's a great cost and a waste of time and resources. If you have the skills for virginise these units, this where very usefull for car repairs.

You have a good experience in electronics , but to add automotive diagnostic to your skills you have to learn how all vehicule systems work ,so it's need less to say you should study vehicule all of it .Have a good chances

hi

I'm not so good with the electronics but if you want to learn mechanics I would agree read, read, read but look at the pictures too and if you have the chance to take things to pieces see how they work or why they failed!

if its already broken then you cannot do any harm but if you can fix or make a bit to fix that feel real good there's a lot of pride in making something that's broken work again

Yes you can learn a lot by practising... I'm also walking down your same road: I read, read and read again, but sometimes I am too shy to practice "for real" (for fear of damaging my precious car...)

BTW, in this forum you can learn a lot! (and even more if you can read french) :D
